How can God be perfect, loving, and forgiving, and yet so judgemental?

Extra Question Details:

The more I read the bible, the more I'm surprised of the picture it paints of God.
I grew up with an image of him that I adopted from my parents and my chuches. But, as I read, something quite different is being shown. I'm shown a God who demands anyone who tries to stay you from His path should be killed, on the spot. You shouldn't try to win them back to God, and spread his love.
You should kill them, and send them to eternal damnation.
I see nothing loving or forgiving in that, in the slightest.

You do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. In order to rightly divide the Word of Truth we must first receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, but to receive this, we must first repent, and deny our own will, otherwise we shall never be able to comprehend the Truth according to God.

Dear AW, could you provide some verses or references for this? I don't recall Jesus commanding that we kill people who don't accept the Gospel of Christ.

Deuteronomy 13:6 says this, which took me by surprise:

"If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known, 7 gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other), 8 do not yield to them or listen to them. Show them no pity. Do not spare them or shield them. 9 You must certainly put them to death. Your hand must be the first in putting them to death, and then the hands of all the people. 10 Stone them to death, because they tried to turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 11 Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and no one among you will do such an evil thing again."

Dear AW, to stop an epidemic of disease you must quickly identify and deal with all people who have the disease and, if possible, stop the disease at its source.

An epidemic of false religion can break out if one person entices or converts another person who then goes out to entice or convert others who then... You get the idea.

Read verse 11 again very carefully. This verse is repeated several times in the Law, and it explains the purpose of the harse, swift response to rebellion and sinfullness among the Hebrew Jews. Anything less and the epidemic of paganism and immorality would have destroyed the nation. The Jews would have been lost. And lost to humanity would have been the Messiah and salvation.

Hope this answers your question. God bless.
