How was Mary a virgin if she was married?

I dont understand how Mary was a Virgin, if she was married to Joseph. How do we know Jesus was not the son of Joseph?

Mary was bethrowed (engaged) to Joseph when she became pregnant with Jesus. When Joseph found out, he was going to send her away, but then the angel of the Lord came to him and told him that it was through the Holy Spirit she became with child. Joseph stood with Mary and then they were married, but I don't believe they had relations until Jesus was born, so Mary was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus. She had other children, but that was after Jesus was born.
