As Christians, to be saved you have to believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior of sins (John 3:16, Romans 10:9-13, and Ephesians 2:8-9). It would seem that you have that down. Even though we could never be perfect like Christ, we are told to be perfect like Him because He is the standard that we should try and live by. Romans 3:23 reminds us of this in when it says we all have sinned and can never be sinless like God.
So the answer to your questions is simply "no," your salvation is not gained by trying to be perfect (for that is works)--we know that it is faith alone that saves us. However, we are told in the Bible that a genuine belief (or faith) in Christ produces good works (James 2:14-26). So ask yourself this, is your faith genuine? If you truly believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, do you feel bad when you knowingly break his commands? If you don't feel bad, then it is possible that all you have is the mere "knowledge" of a man named Jesus dying, instead of truly believing who He was and what His death accomplished. If you truly believe He is our Lord, then you will do your best to follow His commands for you also believe that He can discipline you for disobedience.
