Why is it a sin to have sex with my girlfriend?

Sex is not just about love, it's about commitment. You say that you love your girlfriend and I wouldn't doubt that. However you aren't married yet and thus haven't yet accepted the responsibility that sex requires. Finally seeing that you are currently having sex, and are Christian i must urge you to stop and turn away from this as it is still a sin. This is a chance to show your love for God by following a commandment that you disagree with.
First of all, what is sin? If you take sin to be a simple do and don't then it would be hard to understand why anything is a sin. Why is murder a sin? If it's simply because there's a list of do's and don'ts then by all means, go and murder. Of course you'll get the death penalty and that's why most people don't do it. The consequences.
That's not what makes things a sin. A sin, in my opinion, is anything that draws us away from God. God has instructed that a man should sleep with ONE woman only and that woman be his wife. Disobey and then it's sin.
So, to answer your question briefly and strictly to the point, why is it a sin? Simply because it rebels against God's word.
Why did God instruct that? For your own sake. What if you don't marry this girl? Then what? What will you say to the next girl? What have you got to offer her?
Let's say you DO marry this girl? What have you got to offer her after marriage? What's the point of marrying her if you've already stepped over all the barriers? What have you left for marriage?
Sex outside of marriage is not love. It's lust. As the person said before me, sex is a covenant. A commitment. It's much more than just entertainment. These days the world has made it look so cheap when God intend for it to be the holiest of partnership. And what God has made Holy, don't dare to defile.
I encourage you, as the person before me did, to stop and as Christ instructed "Sin no more". Sure, we aren't perfect, but I'm sure you can avoid a sin such as having sex outside marriage.
apostle paul said that he would rather us not marry to stay single, because if we don't have a family at home to worry about we can just go and do what god wishes us to do! he says "If you cannot contain" then marry! paul is saying that if we cannot contain the urge for sexual pleasures then we should marry. paul goes further to say that "its better to marry than to burn!"
