As Christians, who believe in Jesus Christ as our savior, we are assured of going to heaven. When we are married here on earth, and our spouses also believe in Jesus Christ as their savior, we can expect that they will also ascend. But what happens to our earthly marriage when we are finally there? Do we remain married? What if we had been married before and our first husband or wife had been taken from us by death? Who exactly would we be married to? The answers to these questions are not as difficult as you might believe.

There will be no such thing as marriage in heaven. In Matthew 22:30, it states the words of Jesus, who was posed a question about marriage in heaven, as him saying “At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.” This is as clear an answer as we can get – and straight from Jesus Christ – about whether or not marriage will exist among us when we go to heaven.

There won’t be a need for marriage in heaven. This is illustrated in several passages in the Old and New Testaments. Think about things this way: God – in his infinite wisdom – created marriage here on earth in order to account for certain issues surrounding Adam, the first man. He saw that a companion for Adam was needed, and so came Eve (Genesis 2:18, NIV). This solved the problem of God believing that Adam was alone, for one thing. But we know that we will not be alone in heaven because there will be many fellow believers – and angels – among us, as is shown in Revelation 7:9 (NIV).

We will all know each other in heaven. A husband and wife who had been married on earth will certainly know each other in heaven, and may even have a close relationship. In the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible, the Gospel, according to Matthew 22:23-28, speaks of the issue of marriage in heaven, especially that involving men and women who had been married multiple times in their earthly lives.

Marriage was created by God for us here on earth in order to assure procreation. Through our study of Scripture, we know that God intended for the earth to be filled with humans, and marriage was his instrument for achieving that goal. Heaven, we know, will not be populated through procreation. It will be filled with the believers among us who have been justified through their faith in the Lord. Taken logically, then, this means marriage as an act or an institution won’t be needed. We won’t be lonely, after all, and we also won’t have a need to procreate in order to fill heaven.

Heaven will be the ultimate fellowship. We will not miss marriage nor pine for its passing. This is because heaven will bind us to God and to each other in a way never before possible, even in marriage.
